About MAC Addresses

Vendor prefix

IEEE assigns prefixes of three sizes: 24 bits (MA-L, the classic OUI), 28 bits (MA-M) and 36 bits (MA-S, and the older IAB). The longest matching prefix names the vendor.

Device part

The remaining 24, 20 or 12 bits are numbered by the vendor for each device.

Unicast vs Multicast

Lowest bit of the first byte: 0 = one device (unicast), 1 = a group (multicast). A group address keeps its owner's prefix with that bit set.

UAA vs LAA

Second-lowest bit: 0 = assigned by the manufacturer, 1 = set locally. Phones and laptops use random local addresses for privacy, so they name no vendor.
